Asleep in a Blanket Spun of Energy (2019)

SATB mixed chorus
Dance with the moon and stars and nebulae with this mystical mixed chorus a cappella piece, Asleep in a Blanket Spun of Energy. The English and Anishinaabemowin text beautifully captures a glimpse into the natural and celestial wonders of the Ojibwe world. Laced with ethereal special effects, the music reflects a taste of the syncopated embellished singing, pentatonic melodies, steady drumbeat characteristic of Ojibwe music.

Be Drunk (2025)

SATB mixed chorus and piano
Does Be Drunk for mixed chorus and piano need a warning label about drinking alcohol? Or is it life advice from someone who fully enjoyed mid-nineteenth century Parisian pleasures? However we understand Charles Baudelaire’s poem “Enivrez-vous,” we see joyful and reckless abandon alongside the dark despair that crosses all class boundaries. The exaggerated, almost comical, melodrama in the music expresses the extremes of crushing martyrdom and delightful inebriation, all in a 3/4 waltz meter.

Darkness as Light (2005, revised 2018)

SATB with pedal or lever harp or keyboard
Text — Psalm 139:7-12 NRSV
Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,’ even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Extinction (2022)

SATB (with some divisi) with optional soundscape
Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for Planet Home
Text — “An Extinction” by Kim Stafford
In Extinction, each of the three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.
Language — English
Duration 4:13 (may be longer with soundscape)

Fireflies (2019)

SATB mixed chorus, piano, and percussion
Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for Aether: Fire
Text — Fireflies by Margaret Noodin
Fireflies evokes vivid imagery of Margaret Noodin’s bilingual poem Fireflies. Honoring the composer’s Ojibwe ancestors, the piece sets the poem’s English text including the Anishinaabemowin word for fireflies (Waawaatesiwag). Moments of musical and whispered aleatory capture visions of fireflies on a summer night. Colorful augmented sixth chords and lush harmonies kindle visions of love and nature amidst the dreamy mixolydian modality and lilting ¾ time.

For the Toad on the Kitchen Step (2021)

SATB mixed chorus, organ, and nature soundtrack
Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for Menagerie
Text — For the Toad on the Kitchen Step Kim Stafford
This delightful intermediate-level nature-themed piece is fun to sing and put together with organ and nature soundtrack. It contrasts both the whimsical levity of the poem with the darker implications of humans’ impact on toads and their habitats. Colorful choral harmonies, grand organ gestures, delicate vocal effects, and the nature soundtrack create a soundscape that draws the audience into the toad’s world view.

Neurospicy Songsters on the Road to Bremen (2024)

SATB chorus, solo soprano, solo mezzo-soprano, solo tenor, solo bass, string quartet
Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for Enchanted Forest
Text by Maureen Broy Papovich, based on the 1857 "The Tale of the Bremen Town Musicians" by the Brothers Grimm
This ground-breaking work turns the 1857 Brothers Grimm “The Tale of the Bremen Town Musicians” inside out. Instead of leaving their situations to escape the butcher knife, they discover that their particular neurodiverse and speech traits make them more suited for work in the concert hall rather than in the barnyard. Their journey to musical opportunities in Bremen finds the donkey, the dog, the cat, and the rooster engaged in song, obsessive practicing, singular focus on the road, and fruitful artistic companionship. The music includes several familiar melodies that reflect the animals’ blossoming confidence and skills. Their prowess wins over the threat they encountered deep in the forest. The music highlights the melodramatic narrative with exaggerated whimsy and profundity. Solo voices play the part of each animal, the chorus tells the story, and the string quartet does it all.

Os nace un Cordero (Unto You a Lamb Is Born) (2021)

SATB chorus, pedal or lever harp, and piano
Commissioned by Chorus Austin for On a Winter’s Eve
Text — lines 1-4, 17-20 from “Pastores que veláis” by Santa Teresa de Jesús de Ávila, España 1515-1582
As angels announce the birth of Jesus to the shepherds, Teresa foreshadows Jesus’ crucifixion by referring to him as Cordero (Lamb). She also affirms Jesus as the fully human (hombre también junto) and fully divine son of the sovereign God (Hijo de Dios Soberano). The piece opens with angels approaching from a distance singing “pastores” (shepherds) followed by joyful choral couplets. Several dualities weave together representing the oneness of the human and divine: harp and piano; Venezuelan joropo rhythm derived from Spanish dance; sixteenth century text and twenty-first century music; and major and Phrygian modes. Spanning cultures, oceans, and centuries, this music exuberantly announces the celebrated birth of Christ.
